Enabling Non-Member Community Access for AMS Synced Groups

This article explains how to use the Non-Member Community Access for AMS Synced Groups setting in Tradewing.

This setting allows non-members—who are synced to specific groups through an AMS (Association Management System)—to access only those groups without granting access to the broader member-only community.

What This Feature Does

When turned on, this setting gives access to people who are not active members of your association but are assigned to one or more groups through your AMS integration to:

  • View and interact with only the specific groups they’ve been assigned to via AMS Group Sync

  • Not access any other member-only content or groups in the platform

Who Can Use This Setting

This setting will be available only if:

  1. You have your Tradewing platform connected to an external AMS

  2. You are using "Group Sync" to assign people to groups

  3. Your community privacy setting is set to "Members Only"

If any of these conditions are not met, this setting will not appear in the admin interface.

What Non-Members and Members Can See

If the person is not a member, but synced to a group:

  • They will only see and access the group(s) they were assigned to

  • They will not be able to:

    • Browse other groups

    • View the member directory

    • Join events or access member-only resources

If the person is a member:

  • They will continue to see everything they normally can:

    • All of their assigned groups

    • The member directory, community feed, events, and resources

Example Scenarios

Scenario 1: Your AMS assigns a non-member to a webinar group

  • That person can access the webinar group only

  • They won’t see anything else in your online community

Scenario 2: A full member is assigned to two groups

  • They can access both groups and the rest of the member-only community

Scenario 3: A non-member was assigned to three groups, but later removed from them

  • They will no longer be able to log in or see anything

Scenario 4: A member’s membership expires, but they were assigned to groups through AMS

  • They will still be able to access those specific groups

  • They won’t be able to browse new ones or use the rest of the community

Scenario 5: A non-member later becomes a full member

  • Their access will automatically expand to include the full member-only experience

How to Enable the Setting

Go to your admin dashboard:

  1. Click on General Settings

  2. Look for Non-Member Community Access for AMS Synced Groups

  3. Toggle the setting to On

If your platform isn't connected to an AMS or doesn't use Group Sync, this option won’t appear.

A helpful message will also appear explaining the setting:

Once enabled, non-members can access the Community Feed but will only see the groups they belong to. They cannot join or explore other groups.

Tips and Best Practices

  • You may want to keep track of when this setting is turned on or off

  • Make sure your staff knows that non-members won’t see the full community

  • Test what non-members can see before launching a program to them
